The problem with book club

  • May. 5th, 2009 at 10:51 PM

My problem with book club is not with the book club establishment or with my club in particular -- it is completely of my own making. I don't give myself enough time to read the whole book. Then I go to book club and discuss the tome*, which gives me a false sense of closure and seriously reduces my motivation to finish it. The unfinished books are piling up and mingling with the unstarted books, and any day now my literary world will tumble into chaos. Well really I would simply prefer the sense of accomplishment in finishing the books.

*unlike college, I don't have to pretend I finished the book

I recently realized that while I don't like the spiciness of hot peppers, I do enjoy the hotness of wasabi, mustard, and horseradish.

quick note on coffee and beer

My taste for coffee seems to be limited to Starbucks or diner/restaurant coffee.

As for beer I've been drinking Fat Tire and Sierra Nevada.

Maui and the Half-Marathon Recap

  • Sep. 26th, 2008 at 9:43 AM
The team flight was delayed on Friday morning, which resulted in a missed connection from Honolulu to Maui. Groups of people from our flight from San Francisco were getting put onto flights to Maui, which left every half hour to hour. It was just frustrating because we didn't know when we would go. There were a few different San Francisco area teams, so we didn't all know each other but we met as we overheard each other talking about the TNT shuttle that was supposed to pick us up in Maui. When I arrived in Maui I noticed that I did not have my phone. Luckily they were able to grab it from the plane with no trouble and I made the shuttle to the hotel.

Book Meme

The top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish.

This probably goes without saying, but I personally don't have books on the shelf for appearance.

anniversary

  • Jul. 29th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
A year ago today I finished packing up a U-Haul, and my mom and I (and Potter) drove from Portland to San Jose to start my life in the bay area. Good move, Lani!

Good stuff:

• I got an iphone 3G today.
• Last week I got an LCD HD TV to make more room in my place, some shelves to replace the wire cubes I was using and a new rug since Chase was chewing up the old one. It is nice to have the place refreshed.

Not So Good stuff:

• Yesterday I broke my no-eating-at-McDonald's rule. It's been 4 years.

Bad Stuff:

• Vladimir will be living in Russia for another 14 months or so.

a couple things I got excited about

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - a 3 part series available on iTunes written by Joss Whedon and starring NPH!
I haven't watched it. Soon.

Entertainment Weekly's "New Classics" lists - I tallied my scores. I've seen 89 of the 100 movies, and read 23 of the 100 books. What about you?

• I made an animation that appears on the homepage of klutz.com

• A cardboard display I designed the art for is now up at all Michaels stores (for about two more weeks).

• An ad I designed appeared in the New Yorker magazine a few weeks ago:

• There are some funny videos on YouTube featuring stunts from The Encyclopedia of Immaturity (which is a book I recommend checking out): http://www.youtube.com/user/ProfessorOfYouth

Running update

  • Apr. 3rd, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Part of my TNT training was running a 12k race to get the feeling of what the half-marathon will be like. I ran in the Emerald Across the Bay race on March 16. There was intense uphill at the beginning and end. The wind was at my back over the bridge, which was nice. I did a 13:52 minute mile, which is in the range I expected since I still walk a lot at this point. My final time was 1 hr 43 minutes. There was water available at miles 3.5 and 6. I wished there were three water stops. I need to start carrying my own water.

After doing this event I feel a lot more confident about the half-marathon on May 4. Miina will be running it with me, which will be much more fun than doing it alone. Having someone to chat with makes it easier to ignore the pain and tiredness!

Here are photos of me from the Emerald race: http://www.brightroom.com/view_user_event.asp?EVENTID=35058&BIB=2063&S=230&PWD=

go ahead, steal my thunder

Yesterday at work someone announced that she and another coworker would be walking 40 miles in July and need to raise $1800 each for breast cancer. I am running 13.1 miles in May and am raising $2400 for blood cancers. I was originally planning to send my fundraising e-mail out to coworkers a couple weeks ago. Now I wish I had. I plan to ask my company for a corporate sponsorship too. I guess we'll see what happens.

bad metaphors

  • Jan. 6th, 2008 at 5:49 PM
I got a library card today. I put a bunch of stuff on hold and then proceeded to a bookstore where I bought two books. I haven't even been spending very much time reading lately. Once again my eyes are bigger than my stomach (closest metaphor I could think of).

I'm itching to start a new (creative) project, but I don't have enough motivation. Sigh.

P.S. Lomo has an affordable ring flash. I want it!

I've wondered this before

I wonder what percentage of the things I (think I) know of the world/life came from secondhand sources (tv, movies, friends). It's probably pretty high.

food intimacy

  • Dec. 19th, 2007 at 4:07 PM
I always get this special feeling when someone shares food or drink with me.

It may not be a big deal to them, but I view it as a sign of trust and interest or affection (friendly or romantic).
